Cede Robot Watering Pots from Optimus Meow on Vimeo.
The Cede Project aims to build small self contained robots that autonomously grow food in un-used spaces. The robots can scale from tending a few window boxes to a small field.
The end goal of the project is to see food grown continually without any human interaction other than choosing what to grow. The use of tireless robots allows for revolutionary chemical free growing techniques to produce plentiful supplies of quality food at virtually no cost. Growing instructions are in the form of simple computer files that can be exchanged across the internet.
“cede means to give over, surrender or relinquish to the physical control of another - while a seed is a small hard fruit or a mature fertilized plant ovule consisting of an embryo and its food source and having a protective coat”

Grow Anywhere
- The use of robots for growing food opens a whole world of spaces to grow food in. When robots can both grow and pick the food autonomously then roof tops, entire sides of buildings or purpose built towers can be used as well as the ground.
Grow Better
The growing instructions for plants are simple computer files that can be exchanged across the internet. Enthusiasts can tweak the instructions allowing the whole community to benefit from a better crop.
Intelligent watering checks the soil to see if watering is required then waters the crops precisely. This is both more efficient with water and gives crops an advantage over the weeds.
Grow More
- Cede scales up at virtually no cost. By using a “smart” robot and “dumb” infrastuctrure the cost of expanding into new land is simply the cost of laying down new wooden rail.
Getting Started
- Build a Cede robot
- Lay down some simple infrastructure
- Get some seeds
- Download some instructions
- Wait a while
- Pick and eat!
